A Holistic Approach to Mature & Dry Skin

You may have noticed we don't use the term anti-aging when describing our skin care. This is intentional. Why? Because the concept of anti-aging goes against nature. It is our belief that beauty is found when we realign ourselves with nature and stop fighting the glorious cycles of change. We will not participate in or reinforce the toxic, disempowering, and shallow concept of beauty the modern world has shaped and forged. Instead, we choose a beauty that is deep and sacred. One that embraces, uplifts, welcomes and empowers everyone.

That being said, we are well acquainted with the nature, and the shifting rhythms and needs, of mature skin. All of our products are formulated to support, nurture, nourish and beautify mature skin. While there are structural differences between mature skin and youthful skin, mature skin isn’t an imbalance, and we don’t address it as if it is. However, we can think of it as a subcategory. Generally, the care of mature skin would be secondary to any skin imbalance that might be present. Is it mature and dry or dehydrated? Is it mature and sensitive? We suggest starting with the dominant imbalance, whether that be sensitivity, dehydration, etc., — and then weaving in our tips for mature skin to complete your home care ritual.

Caring for Mature Skin

The typical goals for mature skin are to enhance suppleness and firmness while minimizing fine-lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

Regular face-massage, done by yourself at home when applying products, can be absolutely transformative. Face massage stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, moves lymph (which is not just essential for skin health, but beauty as well), and can help to sculpt and define the face. While practicing self-face massage, make sure to always massage with slow, gentle and intentional movements. This is a time for presence, not something to do mindlessly.

A nourishing diet filled with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, high-quality protein, and lots of vegetables is also an important step in creating radiant, nourished and supple mature skin. Drink bone broth daily to get a good dose of hyaluronic acid, collagen building-blocks, and an array of other skin nourishing nutrients. Focus on the nourishing fats you find in things like avocados, coconut, salmon, mackerel, butter and ghee. Let your ‘treats’ be antioxidant-rich fruit, like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries. And most especially, you want to avoid inflammatory, oxidative and glycation-inducing foods like processed flours, sugars, and processed oils.*

As with all skin, our foundational protocol is the twice daily application of an Oil Serum and a HydroSoul. This pairing deeply nourishes, hydrates, moisturizes, tones, balances pH, and re-establishes a healthy hydrolipid barrier, which is essential for all skin function and true skin health and radiance. Combine that with daily gentle cleansing, daily sunscreen application, and a weekly clay mask, and you will have all your bases covered.

Mature skin asks for fortifying, antioxidant rich plant ingredients. To best support mature skin we begin by nutrients, hydration, and moisture. Choosing only the most potent, nutrient and antioxidant rich products to feed your skin is one of the most important steps you can take in your skin care ritual. These are our top choices.

While all HydroSouls can help support mature skin — with their abundance of antioxidants and profound ability to deeply hydrate — our favorite choice is Frankincense HydroSoul. It is fortifying, revitalizing and supremely beautifying. This special plant water is distilled from the dried resinous sap of the hardy desert frankincense tree. When wounded, the frankincense tree produces this sap to heal and repair its wound, seal in hydration and keep out pathogens.

All of our Oil Serums work in supporting mature skin, but here are some of our favorites:

Pomegranate Vitality Serum. This essential oil free Oil Serum is a nutrient and antioxidant powerhouse, and a veritable buffet of essential fatty acids, while also being profoundly protective, revitalizing, calming, plumping and restorative. It is our first choice for skin that needs extra nourishment and support, and is ideal for mature skin. Similarly, our Sanctuary Nectar Serum is a wonderful choice, as it is the most nutrient-rich and nutrient-diverse of all our Oil Serums.

If your main focus is centered around sun damage — Rosehip Calming Serum (Blue) is an excellent choice. For a more lightweight antioxidant-focused choice, or where skin is experiencing sensitivity, Blue Cactus Beauty Elixir is mature skin’s best ally. If lush, radiant, supple and peaceful skin is your goal, then choose our Rose Trinity Beauty Elixir.

A weekly, or even twice-weekly, Clay Mask is another essential step in supporting and creating mesmerizing luminescence in mature skin. Restorative and refining, clay is a sustainable and long-term replacement for harsh exfoliation treatments like acids, enzymes and peels. A weekly clay mask refines and exfoliates, revealing fresh, smooth, firm and resilient skin. Clay is also rich in minerals — especially silica, the ‘skin mineral’ — and nourishes and fortifies the skin with each use. Minerals are the building blocks of strong, resilient and firm skin. Our favorite clay for mature skin is our French Rose Clay.

Another dreamy addition for mature skin is our Sea Algae Serum — just a pump or two, either applied when skin is still damp from HydroSoul, or added to the palm of your hand and blended with your Oil Serum. Bio-fermented kelp extract, microalgae extract, CoQ10, hyaluronic acid, and gotu kola (Centella asiatica) unite to create a firming, hydrating, plumping, nourishing, restorative and cooling gel serum.
