What Causes Oily Skin?
Anyone who experiences excess oil on the skin knows it can be difficult to hone in on exactly what the cause of oily or combination skin is. The skin is a diagnostic tool, communicating the inner workings of our bodies (things like stress, hormones, and what we eat) as well as external forces (things like seasonal changes, climate, pollution or toxins, and using harsh products) onto our skin.
And while things have begun to shift over the last several years, there is still undo fear around the idea of using oil to care for oily skin. This fear centers around two thoughts; putting oil on already-oily skin contributes to excessive oil, and oil clogs pores. But both of these concepts are just myths based on skewed misinformation. In reality, all skin requires oil to function and thrive. And pure, whole, unrefined, high-quality oils are absolutely essential for total skin health.
Many turn to harsh products that make skin feel ‘squeaky clean’ only to find oily skin is more oily. This is because these products actually strip your skin’s natural protective barrier, leaving it fragile and susceptible to sensitivity and forcing your skin to produce more sebum to replenish the oil that’s being removed.
The key to finding harmony is in choosing the right oils. Lightweight oils such as Rosehip (rich in vitamins and EFAs that regenerate and strengthen skin cells) & Jojoba (regulates sebum production and helps skin retain moisture) are amazing for supporting oily skin. These are the heart of our favorite balancing Oil Serums.
When it comes to skin health, oils are still only half of the equation. For ideal results, oils should always be paired with plant waters. This is because it is both oils and waters that make up the very top layer of the skin known as the acid mantle or hydrolipid barrier. And it is the balance between the two that keeps skin properly hydrated, moisturized, protected, resilient, and peaceful.
Oily and combination skin will benefit from the addition of a HydroSoul at every step of the skin care ritual.
Saturate your face with HydroSoul when you wake up and before you go to sleep.
Apply before and after using a day cream.
Mist after cleansing, and after shea or clay masking.
Mist throughout the day, inhaling and exhaling deeply each time.
If your skin begins to feel oily throughout your day, instead of blotting papers, mist generously with a HydroSoul, and press into skin. This will encourage the skin to balance by re-absorbing the excess sebum.
Instead of washing your face, simply saturate your skin whenever it feels oily.
There’s no limit to how much HydroSoul you can use, go crazy! Notice how your skin looks and feels after 2 weeks of consistent HydroSoul misting.
