Winter Sun: The Radiance of Calendula

Winter Sun: The Radiance of Calendula

Harness the Ancient Wisdom of the ‘Bride of the Sun’

As winter’s chill sets in and daylight wanes, our skin reflects the season—parched, dull, and yearning for warmth. In this time of retreat and renewal, we turn to calendula: a golden bloom infused with the nurturing energy of the sun.

Known as the “Bride of the Sun” in ancient traditions, calendula’s vibrant yellow and orange petals have long been a symbol of vitality and radiance. Folklore tells us of its heliotropic nature, how its blossoms follow the path of the sun across the sky, absorbing its life-giving light. In herbal traditions, it was cherished not only for its cheerful beauty but also for its powerful therapeutic properties. Calendula is a remarkable ally in skin care. It's gentle, soothing nature calms irritation, quenches dryness, alleviates rashes, heals wounds, softens and infuses the skin with luminescence like few other plants can. It is an ideal ingredient for the whole family.

This cherished flower’s legacy spans cultures and myths. In the Middle Ages, it was dedicated to Freya, the Germanic goddess of love, and later to the Virgin Mary, earning the name “marigold.” Its roots trace further back to Roman and Greek mythology, where it was known as sponsa solis, or “Bride of the Sun.” According to legend, calendula was born from the devotion of Caltha, a young woman transformed into a flower after her love for Apollo, the sun god.

Ancient wisdom

We honor calendula’s ancient wisdom by crafting it into our Whipped Shea Butter with Olive Leaf, Sanctuary Products and many others. Harvested at its peak, ROC (Regenerative Organic Certified) calendula blossoms from Oshala Farms are slowly infused into ROC extra virgin olive oil over four to six weeks. This gentle process allows the plant’s carotenoids and skin-barrier-supporting resins to infuse into the oil, creating a powerhouse of nourishment.
