On Staying Human

On Staying Human

“The earth is our origin and destination. The ancient rhythms of the earth have insinuated themselves into the rhythms of the human heart. The earth is not outside us; it is within: the clay from where the tree of the body grows. When we emerge from our offices, rooms and houses, we enter our natural element. We are children of the earth: people to whom the outdoors is home. Nothing can separate us from the vigour and vibrancy of this inheritance. In contrast to our frenetic, saturated lives, the earth offers a calming stillness. Movement and growth in nature takes time. The patience of nature enjoys the ease of trust and hope. There is something in our clay nature that needs to continually experience this ancient, outer ease of the world. It helps us remember who we are and why we are here.”

― John O'Donohue, Beauty: A Study of Beauty in Celtic Spirituality and the Human Spirit

To be human is to belong to the earth.

Long before we understood ourselves through titles, professions, possessions, or screens, we knew ourselves by our relationship with the living world. We rose with the sun. We gathered food from the land. We found medicine in plants. We listened to rivers, seasons, birdsong, and the wind.

We were shaped by the earth because we are shaped from the earth.

John O'Donohue writes of our "clay nature," a beautiful reminder that our bodies are not separate from creation but formed from its very substance. Clay is humble. Receptive. Living. It holds water. It becomes the vessel from which life emerges. So, too, our bodies.

The words humus, humility, and human seem to echo one another, reminding us to stay humble and grounded. To be down to earth is not merely a way of speaking; it is a way of being. It is to remember that we are made from the same stuff that nourishes forests, flowers, and oceans. This is why we feel most whole when our lives move in rhythm with the earth.

Our modern lives make so easy to forget to be human. To protect what makes us deeply, beautifully alive. To nourish ourselves with living foods. To walk beneath open skies and feel the warmth of sunlight on our face. These are not indulgences.

Our Alchemist, Hannah Vega of Afro Foragers; foraging is a way to reconnect with ancestral memory, land-based knowledge, and relationship with the earth.

Every time we choose to slow down and touch the earth we reclaim something essential. Our humanity.

We believe beauty begins here, not with perfection, but with presence. Not with striving, but with belonging.  Skin is not a surface to wage war against; it is the living boundary where earth meets spirit. Every plant we grow, every HydroSoul we distill and every ritual we share is rooted in the invitation to simply be yourself.
