Autumn is a season of In Between. It is a time of liminality when the world is in transition. Autumnal skin reflects that. If summer is day, and winter is night then spring is dawn and autumn is dusk. These transitional seasons are often when our bodies need the most support so they can adjust and thrive in the more extreme periods of winter and summer. Through the liminal seasons of autumn and spring, it’s good to keep things simple and focus on deep nourishment. With Autumn skin people might often be dealing with the aftermath of excessive sun exposure, increasing dryness and dehydration, and maybe even some sudden sensitivity or unexpected and even seemingly erratic fluctuations — be it a hormonal breakout or rosacea flare-up.
Pomegranate Repair Serum is a nutrition powerhouse. It is an incredibly nutrient-dense and nutrient-diverse complex of essential fatty acids, covering nearly everything on the spectrum of lipids. It supports barrier-function, feeds the skin a tremendous amount of antioxidants and a plethora of omegas. I always think of it as one of Evan’s true masterpieces. Pomegranate, Rosehip, Sea Buckthorn are all known to minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sun damage, while also holding deeply heat pacifying qualities as well. Studies show that sea buckthorn oil is one of the best substances one can use when dealing with the topical effects of radiation (the sun).
The thickest of our oil serums — Pomegranate Repair’s richness is especially welcomed by skin that often becomes a little drier and more dehydrated during autumn and winter. Deep, gentle, powerful nourishment.
Rose Geranium HydroSoul is always appropriate, but especially during transition periods as it helps skin find its footing, find its balance. Skin too oily? Skin too dry? Skin yo-yoing combination? Skin affected by a hormonal pendulum? Rose Geranium HydroSoul is the answer.
Tulsi HydroSoul. As we step into the colder months and our immune systems have to work harder to keep bacteria at bay and fortify our immune systems. Tulsi HydroSoul is incredibly protective and is a wonderful step to layer into our immune arsenal.
Wild Carrot Nourishing Eye Balm - always appropriate, but especially after a summer of squinting from an abundance of sunlight. This creamy balm is nourishing, protective, regenerative and soothing and can be used not just around the eye area, but all over face(after oil + hydrosol) for an extra layer of protection for dry and irritated skin.
Sweet Blossom Body oil - in addition to nourishing skin, daily body oiling can increase circulation, as well as drop the body into a state of deep relaxation, clarity and groundedness. Sweet Blossom Oil is nourishing, rejuvenate and is a fantastic choice for everyone. It can also be used as a deep but gentle facial cleanser and make up remover. Its multi-functionality makes it a wonderful go-to when skin is craving simplicity.
Plants. Antioxidant-rich seasonal vegetables like squash — delicata, acorn, kabocha, pumpkins, spaghetti squash — all abundant in beta-carotene — nourish deeply and help the body prepare for the winter ahead. Root vegetables ground, stabilize, and build — any and all, but my personal favorite is Purple Sweet Potato. Have you ever tried these? They’re incredibly delicious — arguably the best root vegetable on the planet — and brimming with anthocyanin — the same antioxidant that’s in blueberries. Cold-season veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale are also essential.
Spice. Autumn is also a perfect time to incorporate warming and anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric and ginger and cinnamon into your daily diet.
Support digestion and immune function with cultured foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, and kimchi. Sauerkraut and kimchi are especially important this time of year — both for support of your microbiome and immunity and to get a hefty dose of vitamin C.
If craving a sweet, reach for something whole, unprocessed and in season. In the case of those of us in the northern hemisphere, this likely looks like apples, persimmons, pomegranates, and pears.
And it can't go without saying that you must never forget lots of nourishing fats and high-quality proteins.
For many of us at evanhealy, this season of long, cool, dark nights is our favorite period in the Earth’s rhythms. Finding the beauty and embracing the change can transform struggle and discomfort into ease and pleasure. Allow these long night and earthly stillness to carve space in your life for self-care, gentleness and deep nourishment, and see just how magical and enchanting this part of the cycle can be.
